With an ever increasing demand for energy and a rapidly diminishing supply, more businesses are looking for ways to cut rising energy costs and put responsible measures into action that will reduce their carbon footprint.

The majority of IT energy consumption in the modern datacenter is used to power and cool servers and peripheral devices. Most servers will run at 50% utilization or less, however they’re still consuming 100% power. The more servers that are brought online, the more this inefficiency becomes compounded.

The aim is to implement environmentally friendly solutions that have a positive ecological impact without compromising business performance. Virtualization refers to a class of technologies designed to separate software from underlying hardware resources allowing businesses to increase server resource utilization and decrease IT related energy costs. Virtualization is a significant step towards greening IT and improving operational efficiency.

LANAIR provides Server, Desktop and Application virtualization solutions for companies interested in reducing their carbon footprint and decreasing energy costs. For more information, details of the virtualization services we provide are shown below.

Server Virtualization  Watch a Short Presentation (350 KB)

Server virtualization introduces a transparent layer that overlays the physical server, separating the physical from the logical. This layer subdivides a single server into multiple separate containers called virtual machines (VM’s) in which different server platforms can be run. Computing resources are pooled and shared between VM’s handling different applications.

Using server virtualization, the number of servers is reduced, computing resources are freed up and server utilization is maximized. Dissimilar server platforms (Windows, Linux, Novell, etc.) can be hosted on the same physical device. Virtualization can cut down on the power needed to operate, cool and maintain equipment by as much as 75% and multiply efficiency ten-fold.

Features & Benefits:
  • Distributed servers are generally utilized at only 20% to 30% of their capacity. Server consolidation can boost hardware utilization up to 80%.
  • Virtualized servers allow you to do more with less, allowing companies to decrease the number of physical devices and avoid server sprawl.
  • Decreased power, cooling and hardware costs.
  • Virtual server environments offer greater flexibility as different OS environments can be created quickly.
  • Allows companies to reduce their carbon footprint with a solution that is beneficial for business and the environment.

Desktop Virtualization  Watch a Short Presentation (2 MB)

Desktop virtualization provides many of the advantages of the server-centric thin-client model, but brings much greater capability and flexibility – taking the desktop experience to a whole new level. This service allows administrators to host and centrally manage desktop VM’s while giving users a desktop that incorporates their personal settings and applications, regardless of computing appliance or location. Through desktop virtualization, users can be granted the ability to install and configure their own applications and experience a pristine desktop environment identical to that of a full PC workstation from anywhere.

Citrix XenDesktop 4  Features & Benefits:
  • Instant provisioning of new desktops.
  • Simplified desktop management: The desktop image is stored and managed in one location simplifying desktop provisioning, patching, security and updates.
  • Reduced power consumption & lower TCO: Low power desktop appliances can replace standard PC’s to reduce energy consumption without degrading performance.
  • The normal desktop lifecycle can be extended from 3 years (on average) to as many as 6 years or more.
  • Ability to access desktop from any appliance (whether a thin-client device or the users home PC).
  • Automatically power down or suspend desktops that are not in active use.

Application Virtualization

In application virtualization a virtualization layer acts as an intermediary between the application and the operating system, transparently redirecting file and Registry operations at runtime to a virtual location. Applications are “fooled” as they interact with this layer into believing that they are directly accessing the operating system and its resources. Application virtualization improves security, portability and compatibility of software applications.

Features & Benefits:
  • Applications are isolated from the OS, so they can run on a different operating system then they were designed for.
Additionally, isolating the application from the OS also improves security.
  • Incompatible applications can be executed side-by-side at the same time.
  • Cost reduction by standardization of OS configuration across all desktops (applications required are no longer an influencing factor).
  • Simplified OS migration and application deployment.
